India is home to the largest number of hungry people in the world. The Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2014 ranks India at 55 among 76 countries. In addition, there is both clinical and anecdotal evidence of widespread child malnutrition in several pockets in India. This project plans to create a sustainable solution that provides knowledge for utilisation of local resources / food-habits to fight malnutrition in children. C-MAM (Community based Management) Approach will be deployed to assess evaluation of indegenous foods to target MAM-Children in Dharavi suburb of Mumbai. The overall nutrition profile of each beneficiary will be closely monitored. Health impact will be evaluated through follow-ups. The Project is undertaken with 3 other institutions such as : Pediatrics Dept (Sion-Hospital), SNEHA (Mumbai based NGO) and the CDPO- ICDS office in Dharavi block Maharashtra. The output shall provide details about the improvement, catering to reduction of micronutrient deficiency, improvement in weight and height of infants and preschoolers. The outcome from this Pilot controlled trails will be useful in devising strategies in addressing Malnutrition by state public- health machinery.
