Development of coloured cool coatings
PI: Prof. Anand Khanna, Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science
In a country like India, the summer season is dominated by high temperature in the range of 35-45 C. The range of temperature is increasing annually in the view of current scenario of global warming. The demand for air conditioning in buildings and automobiles is increasing. There were approximately 2 million room air conditioners (AC) in India in 2006, and that number increased to as much as 5 million by 2011. Moreover, the increase in the ambient air temperature creates consequent increase in the buildings surface temperatures and the air temperature inside the buildings. To avoid the thermal discomfort for users, more energy is being utilised on air conditioners. In this context, the development of cool paints has great potential in reducing the thermal discomforts for people and cutting down on the costs incurred on air-conditioners. The cool paints that are being developed through this project give substantial difference of temperature after applying to the surface. The cool paints will have dark coloured NIR reflecting/cool pigments. The NIR reflective base coat and cool topcoat will be formulated by the combination of IR reflecting pigments, which deflect IR radiation.
