India is the second-largest producer of both grey-iron castings as well as steel castings, and casting production was estimated to be nearly 7.4 million tonnes. The Indian foundry industry produces various grades of value-added castings as per various international standards. For the sustainable development of India, the reclamation of foundry sand is crucial since the rapid rate of growth of foundry production uses huge amounts of foundry sand. Generally 10 per cent of the sand is disposed considering it as dead due to the accumulation of binders used in recycling the sand. This amounts to a large fraction considering the requirement of sand by a foundry. Being toxic, the dumped sand would pollute the atmospheric air as well as the ground water having a long-lasting effect on the environment and plants. In addition to the environmental problem, the non-availability of dumping ground and high dumping cost are of critical concern. This project proposes to manufacture a small customised sand reclamation plant for individual foundries which addresses various issues as mentioned above.
